Scientists at LSU Health New Orleans’ Neuroscience Center of Excellence, led by Nicolas Bazan, MD, PhD, Boyd Professor and Director, have identified a new mechanism that regulates a protein key for cell survival. It appears to protect against the excessive oxidative stress that precedes the development of neurodegenerative diseases of the brain and eye.

An LSU Health New Orleans research study led by Siqiong June Liu, PhD, Professor of Cell Biology and Anatomy, has found that cerebellar inhibitory interneurons are essential for fear memory, a type of emotional memory formation. Inhibitory interneurons within the cerebellar circuitry act as gatekeepers and control the output of the cerebellar cortex. The formation of fear memory requires the activity of these interneurons. The findings, which may lead to a novel treatment approach for post-traumatic stress disorder, are published in
Cell Reports.

LSU Health New Orleans study is the subject of a commentary published in eBioMedicine, a premium translational biomedical research journal of The Lancet. The LSU Health New Orleans research found that low-density neutrophils may represent a novel immunological link to explain how obesity establishes a chronic inflammatory condition that promotes coexisting diseases, including cancer. It also confirmed and translated pre-clinical findings to human patients.

Study Reports Potential Target and Compounds to Slow the Development of Alzheimer’s Disease

Researchers at LSU Health New Orleans Neuroscience Center of Excellence and Karolinska Institutet have discovered a potential biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis that may also serve as a therapeutic target. Examining cerebrospinal fluid samples from patients with cognitive impairment ranging from subjective impairment to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, they found a shift in the profile of specialized lipid mediators from pro-resolving to pro-inflammatory. The results of the exploratory study are published in the Springer journal,
Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology.
